When it comes to getting traffic to your blog, there are many ways. In this article, we’re going to touch on a few methods that we’ve been using ourselves and they have been proven to work.

First, please note that although the title of this post is about “blog traffic”, the methods discussed are also applicable to HTML or static website. Also, we only focus on how to get traffic for FREE! We’re not discussing the PAID methods such as PPC and Media advertising.

Here are a few proven methods we use to generate free traffic to our blogs:

• Article Marketing – Without a doubt this is the best method for getting free traffic. The method isn’t new but it still works very well today! It’s a proven traffic generation method. Besides getting traffic, this method also great for getting quality links. The only hassle is to actually sit down and write a unique 300-400 words articles on a regular basis. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of sites or article directories you can submit your articles to, but the problem is that we only have 24 hours a day. From our experience, we only manage to submit to 3-4 article directories (manually) on a regular basis. From our experience, the 4 most powerful article directories are: EzineArticles.com, ArticleBase.com, GoArticles.com and IdeaMarketers.com. If you’re doing a manual submission, these are the 4 sites you want to submit your articles to.
• Submit Your RSS Feeds to RSS Aggregators – Many RSS aggregators are authority sites and have high page rank. If you submit your RSS feeds to these sites, they will publish your content on their sites and link back to your site. Hence, giving you a lot of link juices and boost your site ranking. We highly recommend you to submit your RSS feeds to feedage.com and feedagg.com
• Social Bookmarking – Same as RSS aggregators, social bookmarking are also authority sites and have high page rank. Therefore, it’s a great way to gain some link juices to your sites. There are hundreds of social bookmarking sites, nobody will have the time to submit his/her site to all. Another big hassle is that you have to create an account on each site before you can submit to them – it’s very time consuming!
• Video Marketing – Video sharing sites like YouTube and metacafe are high traffic sites. You can get tons of traffic to your blog/site if you submit videos to these sites. The challenge, of course, with video marketing is creating an actual video that will get ranked in the search engines.

Now, I know this is a lot of works. Imagine having to go to hundreds of sites to create an account and submit your articles. It will take a lot hell of time if you do it manually!

Let’s face it, TRAFFIC is the lifeblood of any website or blog. I don’t care how good your website/blog looks or how amazing your offers are…. if you don’t have traffic, it’s as good as dead!

There are many different methods to get more traffic to your website or blog. However, all these methods fall under the following two categories:

1. PAID Traffic – it simply means you need to pay for getting traffic
2. FREE Traffic – it means you don’t need to pay for getting traffic

An example of paid traffic is Pay Per Click or PPC where you advertise a bunch of keywords with a PPC system (such as Google AdWords). Google then displays your ads and you pay Google everytime when people CLICK on your ad.

In this blog post, we’ll focus on the FREE traffic.

There are also many ways to get free traffic to your website or blog. The 3 most popular methods are:

• Article Marketing – this is basically a brute force method, you’re required to write keyword targeted articles, the more articles you can write the better. It’s free but TIME + EFFORTS are needed! For more info about this method, I recommend you to read this article: Article Marketing Domination.
• Forum Marketing – same as article marketing. You need to spend time participating in a forum and contribute useful information.
• Social Marketing – this method has taken the online world by storm. There are literally millions and millions of people across the globe using social media platforms like twitter, facebook, myspace and others to communicate, share information and get to know one another.

Let me touch on the subject of Social Marketing a little more details….

The potential of getting more targeted traffic to your website for free using social media (such as twitter) is HUGE!!!

However, you must know how to do it the right way. If you do it the wrong way, you’ll be marked as a spammer and can even get banned from the community. In a nutshell, Web 2.0 is a user-generated site. It’s just like a website but it’s free, anybody can create their sites there. There are many Web 2.0 sites available. Personally, I only use 3. Which 3?

Here are the 3 Web 2.0 sites I use:

- Squidoo.com
- HubPages.com
- Weebly.com

Go and create your web pages in these 3 sites and you’ll start getting free traffic to your blog.

3. Make Videos

Make short and interesting videos about the topics that you’re writing about and submit them to YouTube. Interesting videos always get watched on YouTube and you can tell viewers to visit your blog for more information.

4. Use Social Bookmarking Sites

Social Bookmarking sites are basically sites that categorize and store ‘bookmark links’ (links which take one to a specific website or blog). These are very high-traffic sites because there are literally millions of people all over the globe visit these Social Bookmarking sites to look for information. So, if you bookmark your web pages on these sites, you can get lots of free and targeted traffic.

But bookmarking is a very tedious process, you need to log into each of the sites to bookmark your pages… very boring and time-consuming. 3. Take part in online communities and forums that are related to your site topic. Do your best to help and give useful answers to those who ask questions. Online forum is a great way to establish credibility. Besides able to increase website traffic, you can also use it to build relationships with your potential customers. You can also learn more about people needs and see how your product can fill their needs.

4. Add a WordPress blog on your website. Blog is a fantastic way for communicating with others and the search engines love blogs. I recommend you to read this book: “Bloggers Paycheck” before you set up your WordPress blog.

5. Use Social Networking sites. I know there are hundreds of social networking sites available and I don’t think anybody has the time to do social networking on all these sites. Personally, I just use two: Twitter and Facebook. I’m not going to discuss how to use Twitter and Facebook in this article as there are already many books on this topic. 6. Do you Squidoo? Squidoo is a high-traffic website that have hundreds of thousands of pages on hundreds of thousands of topics. The web pages in Squidoo are called lenses. Everybody can create their own lenses and yes, it’s FREE!

If you have a website or blog and you rely on free organic traffic from the search engines, link building MUST be one of your MAIN FOCUS. When I say link building, I mean building QUALITY one-way links (from other sites) to your site or blog.

The search engines, especially Google will treat sites that have many quality one-way links as AUTHORITY sites. If your site is categorized as an authority site, your site will be able to gain top spot (or 1st page) in Google’s search result page. That’s how you get free organic traffic.

Of course, if your strategy is to rely on getting traffic using the paid method (such as Pay Per Click), link building is perhaps not so important for you. However, many successful Internet marketers are using both free and paid methods. And I think if your plan is to build a long-term online business, you should also focus on both methods.

For me personally, I focus more on the free organic traffic but I do use PPC for getting more specific targeted traffic. I’d say the proportion is about 70 to 30 (meaning that I focus 70% of my time on getting free organic traffic and 30% on PPC traffic). This ratio works very well for me so far.

Here are some of my ways of getting quality one-way links:

1. Article Marketing.

This is not a new method of getting backlinks and is still very effective. This is because some (not all) article directories are considered as “authority” sites by Google. Besides giving you good one-way links, article marketing is also very effective for dominating highly targeted keywords or niche topics. Article Marketing is also very simple to implement, it’s free of charge! You just need to spend time writing 300 to 400 words articles on the topic that’s related to your site or blog, and submit them to the following article directories:

• EzineArticles.com
• ArticlesBase.com
• GoArticles.com
• ArticleDashBoard.com

There are many more article directories. If you have more time, you can also submit your articles to Buzzle.com, IdeaMarketers.com, Amazines.com, Squidoo.com and Zimbio.com. I experience all these sites rank pretty well on the search engines.

2. HubPages

Here is what I do…. I will take the articles I wrote and re-write them. Make them at least 75% different from the original articles and submit to HubPages.com. This site has very high authority and rank very well IF your article is UNIQUE. They hate duplicate articles and will disable your account if they find you submit duplicate articles (even those are your own articles).

Although HubPages use a “NOFOLLOW” tag (which is useless for link building purposes), I will still submit articles to this site mainly because it gives me good free orgarnic traffic.

3. 3 Way Links

This is a PAID method ($47 a month) but is very worth its price. It’s an automated link building service created by Jonathan Leger. This is NOT one of those spammy “link farms”. It builds one-way links to your site AUTOMATICALLY, but NATURALLY.

Here is how it works….

You submit your site for approval. Once it’s approved, the 3 Way Links software will go to work immediately. It will automatically look for sites that are related or in the same category as yours and form a 3 way connection.

For example, let’s say there are 5 sites (A, B, C, D and E) and the software will form a network like  “A -> B -> C -> D -> E -> A“.  So each site has ONE-WAY link to it. This process is NOT built overnight, it builds the links slowly (3 or 5 links per day) until your site reaches 250 one-way links. So the process looks very NATURAL in the eyes of the search engines.

Why do we promote a website? Or why do we optimize and get incoming links for a site?

Write and syndicate articles and press releases (news worthy) at different niche directories that cater to your target audience. It also helps for better search engine rankings.

Think about investing on PayPerClick.

If you publish a blog, make sure that it has RSS or Atom subscription options. You can also add a ‘Subscribe via Email’ option to sustain existing visitors.

Give your visitors the option to send the content to a friend via email (email the post).

Use targeted keywords for every post.

Advertise on other niche sites (think about banner link or paid reviews).

Create communities in different popular social networking websites like MySpace around your product and subtly promote your product.

Offer free products and supplementary tools.

Take your business from online to offline, participate in different seminars and trade fairs in your niche and promote your site.

Submit interesting videos in different video sharing sites.

If you sell something, send the product to niche bloggers (if you can afford it) and ask for reviews.

Engage a cause other than plain business.

Over time as you become a trusted member of the forum, forum members will visit your blog.

3. Offer to guest-blog on established blogs

This solution works because all bloggers are looking for fresh content, and creating that content takes time. Offer to guest-blog on an established blog in your topic. You’ll usually get an acceptance, and you can get an easy link to your own blog, and new readers.

4. Create a newsletter for your blog

Treat your blog as a business, which is what it is, if you hope to make money blogging.

As a business, you exist to serve customers. Your readers are your customers. Create a newsletter for your readers to keep them coming back to your blog.

Since your blog has an RSS feed, there are tools online which will turn your RSS feed into a newsletter automatically, without any effort on your part.

5. Pay attention to keywords in your blog’s topic

Over time, you’ll get the most traffic to your blog directly from the Web search engines, like Google. On my established blogs, 90 per cent of the traffic comes from the search engines.

So how does that traffic arrive? It arrives because people type keywords into the search query field in one of the search engines.

Since the Web search engines are essentially indexing software, they index your blog’s content. If your content contains the keywords typed in by searchers, your blog’s posts will appear in the search query results and you’ll get traffic.

So use the keywords which searchers use in your blog posts.

There are many keyword tools online which will help you to find good hight-traffic keywords.
