Tips On How To Build A Targeted Email List

Ask any successful Internet Marketing Entrepreneur what is their most valuable asset, and most likely they will tell you that it’s their EMAIL LIST!  This is so because with a TARGETED email list, they have targeted prospects that they can turn into buyers almost instantly. Note that I emphasize the word “TARGETED”, it has a very important meaning.

If you have a targeted email list, it means you have TARGET BUYERS – people who are seeking a specific solution for a specific problem. You understand their problem and you’re able to offer them a solution. You see, anyone can build an email list but if your email list is NOT targeted, then they will not buy what you have to offer because your solution doesn’t solve their problem!

In this article, I’m going to share with you some tips and the steps you need to take to build a targeted email list. Here are the steps….

  1. Find a niche. The first thing you need to do is to find a niche topic. There are many ways to find a niche, but I’m not going to discuss them here. I have written a few articles on market research and how to find a niche, you can read them here: “Market Research Tips“.

Let me just share with you a “quick tip” you can use to find your niche. Go to EzineArticles.com! There you will see hundreds of categories and sub-categories, spend 10-15 minutes to browse through the categories and I’m sure you’ll quickly find a niche that interests you the most.

I like to use EzineArticles.com to look for my niche topic because it can save me a lot of tedious research works. Once I find a niche that I’m interested in, I can read other people’s articles and examine what products they promote and how they promote them. Basically, I can learn from them and see how I can do a better job than them.

  2. Understand your target market. Once you’ve found your niche, you need to undertand your niche market. As mentioned earlier, it’s very important that you understand your target market so that you can address their needs.

For example, let say you’re interested in marketing “Home Security System”. If you want to be successful in this niche, you will need to understand that SAFETY is the main concern for those who are considering to buy a home security system. They want to be able to protect themselves and/or their families.

These group of prospects will want to try and find the lowest prices without having to compromise on reliability and quality of the security system.
Now, a great way to market to these people would be to construct a review style website. For instance, you could make a brief review of 3 or more companies and rank them based on reliability, prices, ease of use, etc.

  3. Write a short report. This report will be given free to those who choose to opt in to your email list. TIP: Offering visitors a free report has shown to be incredibly effective in getting them to opt-in. However, your report must be addressing a particular question or concern. For example, you should be writing something along these lines… “Guide For Choosing A Home Security System” or “5 Things To Consider When Choosing A Home Security System”.

  4. Create a Squeeze Page. A squeeze page is basically a sales page, but instead of a “BUY NOW” button, there is an opt-in form, where your visitors can insert their name and email address in order to receive your informative short report.

  5. Promote your Squeeze Page. Now that you have a good report to give away and a squeeze page to capture name and email address, it’s time to get traffic to it so that you can start building your targeted email list. They are many ways to get traffic, I have witten some useful articles on this topic. You can read them here: “Traffic Generation Tips“.
